QUALITIES OF AN IN-HOUSE COUNSEL

in-house counsel. (1974) One or more lawyers employed by a company. – Also termed house counsel; (when employed by a corporation) corporate counsel. Cf.2 corporate counsel.”

general counsel. (1848) 1. A lawyer or law firm that represents a client in all or most of the client’s legal matters, but that sometimes refers extraordinary matters – such as litigation and intellectual-property cases – to other lawyers. 2. The most senior lawyer in a corporation’s legal department, usu. also a corporate officer.3

An in-house counsel or a general counsel should generally possess the following qualities –

i.        Honesty and integrity

This is very important. An in-house counsel should come with it. The skills can be learned.

ii.       Legal skills

The counsel should possess legal skills such as drafting, negotiating, counseling, interviewing, etc., should also be able to represent the corporation in any work related setting.

iii.      Current

Should be up to date with the law as it relates to the niche of the organisation, also should know other laws that relate to the business.

iv.      Communication skills

Should be able to communicate effectively. This includes active listening, verbal communication, good email culture, appropriate social media manners, etc.

v.       Problem solver

          Should be able to provide solutions to problems that arise in their job (should at least try to). 

vi.      Analytical and good judgment skills

          Should be able to do a good analysis and provide good judgment. Should also be able to vet documents.

vii.     Know their place

          The counsel must be aware of their place in the organization.

These are the few qualities that come to mind, there are others too, such as professionalism, time management, dedication, etc
